The Path

In the center of the Bay of Sant’Antonio, just a few meters from the shore, there are three imposing boulders that fell from the overhanging rocky ridge. These boulders, locally known as the “Tre pietrazze” (Three Big Stones), gave rise to the place name “Li 7 Pietrazzi,” which also identifies the beach located right at that spot. To reach it, simply take a path that descends toward the sea, until you arrive in an area where the rocks take on a characteristic yellow-ochre hue.
The rock formations present are limestone and of sedimentary origin, typical of the Bay of Sant’Antonio and other stretches along the Promontory coast. These rocks, called carbonatic, were formed in a deep continental marine environment during the Lower Pliocene, that is, between about 2.58 and 1 million years ago.
The seabed in the area is heterogeneous: some areas are occupied by rocks and boulders from the cliff, while moving further offshore the sandy bottom hosts a lush Posidonia oceanica meadow. The waters of this stretch of sea are inhabited by numerous marine species, including sea bream, wrasses, moray eels, mullets, and octopuses.
